Gus Balbontin is often thought of as a futurist, not because he predicts the future, but because he helps you focus on what you can control to deal with any future. From executive director of Lonely Planet, working with companies such as Google X, Nokia and Amazon, Gus moved back to his entrepreneurial roots becoming an investor, founder and mentor across the start-up eco-system in Melbourne. Over the last 3 years, Gus has presented around the world, from audiences of 10 to that of 10,000, taking attendees behind the scenes to understand what companies did right and wrong during the decades of unparalleled change.
In an upcoming world of AI, Gus warns: “getting too distracted with future guesses will only take time away from you and your company to actually do something about the future”.
The lessons he shares can be applied to all modern business and individuals facing the digital revolution and the relentless pace of technology. He is candid and full of energy. His common sense will disarm you and his practical approach will get you moving on Monday first thing!
Gus will make you laugh hard and equally think deeply about the puzzles of running a business in today’s world.
This is a great event to kick off the BBN calendar for 2020!
“Sleeping his way to the Top”
A conversation with Peter Alexander
At age 24, Peter decided it was time to be his own boss and so the Peter Alexander journey began!
Working from his Mother’s dining room table Peter began making women’s pyjamas selling to department stores. When the phone rang, to make the business seem bigger Peter and his Mum would pretend to be someone else! “It all started with a simple idea and a simple spot!”
From small beginnings to over 100 retail outlets throughout Australia and New Zealand, the Peter Alexander brand grew expeditiously, with the Australian media dubbing him the ‘Pyjama King’ and the nickname has stuck to this day! His humorous, quirky and playful personality shines through in every collection.
The Just Group acquired the business in 2000. Since then, Peter Alexander Sleepwear has grown with leaps and bounds from a pure catalogue based business to a multi-channel business with 100 retail stores within Australia and New Zealand, with Peter Alexander himself as the Creative Director of the brand.
Peter has a great story to tell, a business journey that truly began from humble beginnings to international acclaim. Of course there were highs and lows along the way and Peter will share them with us at this intimate conversation style luncheon. It’s going to be fun!
